How to Choose Carbon-Plate Running Shoes

Carbon plate running shoes
Ever since Eliud Kipchoge broke the 2 hour marathon using carbon plate technology there's been a lot of discussion surrounding them. However, the technology is now mainstream and used by amateur to elite-level runners.

We provide guidance on how to go about choosing carbon-plate running shoes. Carbon fibre plate technology is designed to improve running performance by providing a stable platform as well as more energy return. But with so many brands and types of carbon-plate running shoes on the market, how do you know which one is right for you? How do you know if they are going to benefit you in the same way as elite runners like Eliud Kipchoge. Let’s take a closer look at what carbon plates have to offer and what features to look for when selecting your perfect pair of running shoes.

What is Carbon Fibre Plate Technology?

Carbon fibre plate technology was developed by Nike, and since then has been adopted by many other shoe companies. It consists of a thin carbon fibre plate embedded in the midsole cushioning system of the shoe that helps runners maintain their pace, reduce fatigue, and increase energy return. The idea behind this technology is that it uses springy materials that are able to store and release energy during each step taken. This results in improved speed and efficiency while running. This means that athletes can run faster for longer distances without tiring as quickly.

How Does Carbon Fibre Plate Technology Enhance Running Performance?

Carbon-plates work by improving the stability of the platform on which runners stand. As runners complete their stride (or step) they push off from the ground with their toes. In turn creating an explosive acceleration phase that propels them forward with each stride. With a carbon-plate in place, this motion becomes more efficient because it creates a “bounce back” effect when pushing off the ground. Similar to how a trampoline works, which conserves energy during each stride while providing additional power with every step taken. This makes it easier for runners to keep up with their pace or even increase it over long distances without expending extra energy.

The Injury Risks With Carbon Fibre Plate Technology

It’s important to note that there are some risks associated with using carbon-plate running shoes. Some studies have shown that these shoes can cause greater impact forces on ankles due to their stiffer design compared to traditional running shoes. This means that it’s important for runners who use these type of shoes to be mindful of their body mechanics while running in order to avoid injury or overuse syndromes such as plantar fasciitis. This injury may result from running in them due to the increased pressure on the heel. However, these effects seem to be minimal when used properly. Furthermore, a study has suggested that knee injuries are reduced with the use of this type of shoe

Other Disadvantages to Consider

The major disadvantage of running in carbon fibre plate running shoes is their high price. A pair of these shoes can cost up to twice or even three times the amount of a regular running shoe. So they are an expensive option for most runners. Another issue with carbon fibre plate running shoes is their short lifespan. Even with infrequent use, these shoes can wear down quickly due to their thin sole and firm construction. Furthermore, the performance benefits from these shoes are only seen under fast paced running. At slower speeds they offer no advantage over regular trainers. Some models of carbon fibre plate runners have also been found not to comply with certain competition standards. Therefore, you need to make sure their specs comply with any particular event or race you intend to enter.

Features To Look For When Buying A Carbon-Plate Running Shoe

When buying a carbon-plate running shoe there are several features you should consider such as size (length/width), cushioning level (soft/firm), arch support (high/low), heel drop (high/low), weight (lightweight/heavyweight), etc. Size should be determined based on foot measurements taken from your local shoe store. The cushioning level will depend on personal preference. But the arch support should match your natural foot shape. The heel drop should match your gait pattern and weight should be light enough so you don’t feel burdened while running. But it should also feel sturdy enough so you don’t feel unstable during faster runs or longer distances. It’s also important to look for breathability features such as mesh panels or perforated leather uppers. The mesh will help keep feet cool and dry during runs without sacrificing comfort or support needed for optimal performance levels during races or training sessions alike!

Carbon-Plate Running Shoes to Consider

Nike were the early pioneers of carbon-plated technology. Their Nike Breaking 2 project featured elite runners from around the world to break the 2 hour barrier for a marathon. Eliud Kpichoge used Nike’s carbon-plate technology, Nike Air Zoom Alphafly, to break 2 hours over a marathon.

Final Thoughts

Whilst carbon-plate technology can deliver enhanced running performance, it’s important you consider if they are right for you. Not every runner feels comfortable in carbon-plate shoes and they can take some time to get used to. Taking into account they are a considerably higher price than standard running shoes, it’s important you weigh up if you are going to get an additional benefit to justify the hefty price.
