Brain Training with the Impulse App – A Review

Brain training
Many of us enjoy puzzles, crosswords and number games like sudoku. But are they having a wider impact on our mental health and cognitive function than we think?

Our brains are the most powerful and complex organs in our bodies. It’s claimed with the right training, we can unlock its full potential. That’s where brain training comes in. Brain training is a form of exercise for your mind, just like physical exercise is for your body. Studies have shown that it can help improve cognitive functions such as focus, concentration and problem-solving skills. As a result, we have seen the rise in brain training apps such as Impulse Brain Training. So, we’ve delved into brain training and explored the Impulse Braining App to see how it can improve cognitive function.

What is Brain Training?

Brain training involves activities that help strengthen cognitive abilities like memory, processing speed, and decision-making. It includes activities such as puzzles, logic problems, tasks that require multitasking and games that challenge your focus and concentration. These exercises are designed to challenge the brain, much like physical exercise challenges the body, to help improve overall brain function. With the advent of technology, brain training has become more accessible, with numerous apps and programs now available such as the Impulse Brain Training App.

Does Brain Training Work?

The evidence suggests that brain training can provide real benefits when approached correctly and consistently practised over time. Studies have shown that regular brain training can lead to improved task performance, better memory recall and greater attention span in both healthy individuals as well as those with existing cognitive impairments. The key to getting the most out of your brain training is consistency; you need to practice regularly in order to maximise its effects on your cognitive abilities.

What Scientific Evidence Is There For The Benefits Of Brain Training?

There have been numerous studies conducted on the efficacy of brain training programs over the years. There is conflicting evidence where research suggests that brain training exercise can improve cognitive function and prevent cognitive decline as we age. However, equally there are studies that dispute these claims and state the long term benefits of brain training is still unknown. Many have shown improvements in cognitive performance after regular use of these programs. Although a lot of the studies we’ve identified did conclude that despite some positive findings, further research needs to be undertaken for conclusive evidence.

Straight after answering the questions you will begin one of their personalised workout programmes at the most basic level to get you into the swing of things.

As I selected to improve my memory I was first introduced to a pairing game where I was presented with a number of random images. I had to select the image that had a matching image to form a pair. As I selected the right answers each round became harder as I was presented with a larger selection of random images making it more difficult to identify the pair. The app was assessing my speed to find the pair. So, once I had finished about seven rounds of this game I was presented with my stats which showed how I compared my performance to other Impulse Brain App users.

Based on the option you selected for how long you want to spend each day on brain training, the app selects an appropriate session for that time. The programme unlocks new sessions each day based on your daily preferences.

It’s a concept I really liked as the app doesn’t encourage the behaviour to spend hours solving puzzles. It’s creating the habit that allocating just a small proportion of your day to improve your mental muscle.

As you complete each level successfully you will be rewarded with points which can then be exchanged for prizes from within the app itself! The gamification of the app does provide incentives to users to keep working through the levels and various sessions. I feel it’s a necessary part of the app as some of the games can be a bit repetitive and can be easy to complete.
